The Development of Our Ideal Cell Phone Plans for Switzerland

The path to the current Trio Flat Mobile Swiss, Flat Mobile, and Flat Mobile Plus cell phone plans is also an example of how Digital Republic wants to operate as a provider and where its priorities lie: minimalism, simplicity, and the needs of you, the users. In 2022, we were still very focused on our niche as a provider. Digital Republic stood for simple data SIM cards for all kinds of devices. We did not see ourselves primarily as a mobile provider for smartphones, as this market was already well served. However, our customers still wanted to use the Digital Republic SIM in their smartphones, so we made it possible to combine any tariff with the voice option to create a full-fledged mobile phone subscription for Switzerland. That’s how the journey began.

Among the speed-based tariffs ranging from 0.4 to 2000 Mbits, one proved particularly popular. The Flat 10 plan, with a maximum download speed of 10 Mbits for CHF 10, seemed to be the perfect choice for smartphones for the vast majority of our customers.

Combined with the voice option for CHF 10, more and more people signed up for a mobile phone subscription with Digital Republic for CHF 20 per month. In return, they received unlimited data, calls, and texts within Switzerland, with no minimum contract term or cancellation period.

One year after the huge success of the Flat 10 + Voice combo, we received feedback from our customers that although the subscription and terms were great, the price was slowly becoming a little high for a Swiss unlimited cell phone subscription.

We still didn’t see ourselves as a typical mobile provider, but the hint was clear: our “mobile phone subscription” was too expensive. As a result, we decided in November to treat all our existing and future mobile phone subscription customers on Black Friday by reducing the price of the voice option to CHF 8.

From then on, it was clear: Digital Republic’s customers were looking for an affordable and fair solution for their smartphones. A proper cell phone subscription was needed.

It was ready in the spring of the following year: the cell phone subscription that was to replace the Flat 10 + Voice Combo. With 2 GB of roaming, a connection three times as fast, and a clenched fist as its mascot, the subscription plunged into the shark tank of the Swiss mobile market.

The price of CHF 18 was exactly the same as for a Flat 10 + Voice plan, and the additional roaming gave the subscription the boost it needed to go from being an insider tip to the most popular product in just a few months.

The success of Flat Mobile has been encouraging, but a single mobile phone subscription does not meet all customer requirements. What about those who do not want roaming included, but simply want unlimited surfing and calling in Switzerland? After all, many were satisfied with Flat 10 + Voice.

The answer to the problem: Flat Mobile Swiss. A subscription that focuses on the essentials, for anyone who mainly travels within Switzerland. Flat Mobile Swiss offers exactly that for a super-low price of CHF 13.

At the same time, we have equipped Flat Mobile with 100 minutes of roaming calls per month and 5G full speed without increasing the price, because many of you also wanted roaming calls included.

With a low-cost subscription and a standard subscription, all we needed was a premium option for those who don’t want to compromise. It was clear that we wanted to keep the price below CHF 30 per month, and so after just one month, Flat Mobile Plus completed our trio of mobile phone subscriptions.

With 12 GB of roaming per month and unlimited roaming minutes within the EU/US/UK zone, Flat Mobile Plus is the ideal solution for globetrotters and business heroes. Those who pay annually receive a full 144 GB of roaming for free use throughout the year. This makes Flat Mobile Plus ideal for vacation surfers and camping streamers.

Our customers diligently recommend us to others, as an evaluation by our marketing department has shown. A provider could hardly wish for better advertising. That is why we wanted to reward this commitment and pass on the advertising budget saved to these customers in the form of a discount.

Curtains up for “Friends with Benefits”!

Customers of Digital Republic can use a referral link to invite other people to use one of the Flat Mobile cell phone subscriptions in any way they choose. These people can then invite others to join the group, and so on. For each active cell phone subscription in a group, the discount for everyone increases, up to a maximum of 30%.

This makes the three subscriptions even cheaper. With 10 or more active subscriptions in a group, the Flat Mobile subscriptions cost only CHF 9.10, CHF 12.60, and CHF 17.50 per month.

2 GB of roaming was ideal for launching in the competitive mobile phone subscription market. However, a little over a year after Flat Mobile’s launch, it became clear that 2 GB was a little too minimalistic for many standard subscriptions.

In order to meet the increased demand for data roaming among our occasional abroad users, we have therefore increased the data volume from 2 to 5 GB per month or 60 GB per year. Naturally, this has been done without increasing the price and automatically applies to all existing Flat Mobile customers.

That was the decisive step in realizing that, as a provider, we don’t have to constantly design new subscriptions. The trio covers most use cases perfectly. As soon as one of the products no longer serves its segment optimally, we improve the product directly, without your intervention.

This means we don’t have to worry about running out of ideas for new subscriptions at some point, and you as customers don’t have to worry that your Flat Mobile subscription will become outdated after a while and you may have to switch.

The revised approach and the upgrade of Flat Mobile have shown us what the ideal mobile subscription offer will look like in 2025. To round things off, we wanted to remove all speed limits from our mobile phone subscriptions for the benefit of our customers as the final step of the year.

The 30 Mbit download limit for Flat Mobile Swiss has therefore been lifted for all existing customers. At the same price and under the same conditions as before the change, and fully automatically.
