5G Router Review: AVM Fritz!Box 6850 5G
The FRITZ! devices from AVM have been connecting numerous European households for several decades now. With the FRITZ!Box 6850 5G, AVM delivers a 5G router that not only connects you to the Internet super independently, but also acts as an entry ticket to the entire FRITZ! ecosystem. No matter whether you want to network a telephone system or your smart home. The FRITZ!Box makes it easier than almost any other 5G router.
Hardware: Typical FRITZ!
You can argue about the appearance of routers, but the plastic housing of the FRITZ!Box probably won’t win any beauty contests. That shouldn’t put you off, however, because the classic red and white hood conceals cutting-edge technology.
The FRITZ!Box 6850 5G supports both 5G standalone and 5G non-standalone and is downward compatible up to 3G. The dual-band router can transmit in parallel via WLAN AC (5GHz) and WLAN N (2.4 GHz) with a maximum data throughput of 1.3 GBit/s.
The FRITZ!Box is a true all-rounder. Accordingly, the rear of the router is equipped with numerous connections to enable a wide range of applications. In addition to a USB 3.0 port (side) for storage media and network printers, there are four Ethernet ports, an analog telephone connection and two antenna slots. Two short antennas are included in the scope of delivery.
As part of the FRITZ! ecosystem, the FRITZ!Box 6850 5G can also be used as a control center for a mesh network or for networking FRITZ! smart home devices via DECT.
Software: Firewall, Media Server, FRITZ!OS
The FRITZ!Box not only provides solid hardware, but also extensive and flexible software. The powerful integrated firewall only plays a minor role here, the exciting applications can be found in FRITZ!OS. AVM’s in-house operating system can be accessed via any browser and can also be conveniently controlled via smartphone or tablet using various apps.
FRITZ!OS allows you to use any mass storage device as a media server so that you can stream directly from your router to various end devices. Thanks to VPN, you also have secure access to your home network and thus to the files on your connected storage outside your four walls at all times.
If you connect the FRITZ!Box to your landline, the free FRITZ!Fon app allows you to use your smartphone as a landline phone, no matter where you are. You can also connect your FRITZ!Box to your DVB-C connection and watch TV on the move with a corresponding app.
The FRITZ!Box devices are not considered the Swiss army knife of routers for nothing.
