Your Roaming Guide for the Holidays

Everything you need to know before your trip and what to do if you run into any problems.

Internet access abroad should just work. Whether you’re quickly checking your route on Google Maps, looking for a restaurant on the fly, or sending vacation photos right from the beach—when you’re on vacation, you often need just one thing: a stable connection. To help you know before your trip what’s included, what you need to activate, and what to do if you run into problems, here are the most important points.

What is roaming?

Roaming means you use your SIM or eSIM while abroad. Your device connects to a partner network there. Which network that is depends on the roaming agreements that network operators have entered into with their partners abroad. Depending on your plan, roaming is often already included. If not, you can purchase roaming packages from most providers.

Before you set off on your trip, it’s worth taking a look at the following overview.

Roaming is already included in Digital Republic’s mobile plans.

mobile planRoaming inklusive
Flat Mobile Swiss2 GB data in EU/USA/UK
Flat Mobile12 GB data and 100 minutes of calls in EU/USA/UK
Flat Mobile Plus24 GB data and unlimited calls in EU/USA/UK
The amount of roaming data included varies depending on your plan. Your travel destination also plays a role. To use your data allowance while abroad, mobile data and data roaming must be enabled on your phone, and your destination country must be included in your data plan or subscription.

Do you need (more) roaming credit?

Then you can sign up for a roaming package.

Sign Up for a Roaming Plan

Here’s how:

  1. Select the desired SIM or eSIM.
  1. Open Manage.
  1. Go to the Roaming tab.
  1. Tap “Book Package.”
  1. Choose the right package.
  1. Confirm the payment.

On the “Roaming” tab, you can also see if you already have an active roaming package.

Good to know: Our roaming packages are valid for 365 days. They are not activated until you use them while abroad.

If you purchase more data than you need right away, that’s no problem. The remaining data allowance remains valid and can be used later.

How do I turn on roaming on my cell phone?

You’ve signed up for a roaming package, or your plan already includes roaming data. Now all you need to do is enable Mobile Data and Data Roaming on your phone, and you’ll be able to browse the web while abroad:

iPhone

  • Open Settings → Mobile Data

Check there:

  • Mobile data is enabled
  • The correct SIM or eSIM has been selected for mobile data
  • Data roaming is enabled on this SIM or eSIM

Android

  • Open Settings and look for Roaming or Data Roaming
  • For the SIM or eSIM you’re using, enable: Mobile Data, Data Roaming
  • Depending on your device, you can find this setting under Connections, Network & Internet, SIMs, or Mobile Networks

In the event that phone calls are made during the holidays

Data roaming and voice roaming are not the same thing.

This means you can use mobile data abroad without automatically having calls and text messages enabled while abroad.

To make calls and send text messages while abroad, you must enable this feature in the customer portal:

  1. Log in to the customer portal
  1. Select SIM or eSIM
  1. Open Voice Settings
  1. Enable Roaming Calls and Text Messages
  1. Enable Roaming on Your Cell Phone

Roaming not working?

Your checklist:

1. Check your phone settings

Are mobile data and data roaming enabled? Is the correct SIM or eSIM selected?

2. Check the Customer Portal

Is your subscription active? Do you have roaming credit or a suitable roaming plan? If you want to make calls or send text messages while abroad, be sure to check your voice settings as well.

3. Select a network manually

If your phone can’t find a network, you can manually select an available network in the mobile network settings.

4. Restart the device

Restarting the device often helps the SIM or eSIM reconnect to the foreign network.

5. Contact Support

If it still doesn’t work, contact Support. It helps to provide the following information: destination country, device type, affected SIM or eSIM, and a screenshot of the error message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does roaming apply worldwide?

Roaming rules vary depending on your destination. The key factor is which zone your destination country is in.

Zone 1 is already included, depending on your mobile plan. For other destinations outside of Zone 1, you have the option of a Travel eSIM. This allows you to use mobile data abroad via an additional eSIM.

Before you travel, check which option is right for your destination country.

Will my roaming service be automatically renewed?

The amount of roaming credit included in your plan depends on your subscription. Any additional roaming packages you purchase are valid for 365 days. After that, you’ll need to purchase a new package.
